A pep talk for my young (and not so young) professional friends, discouraged by today's job market.http://ping.fm/pPMjU
It’s the Economy – You’re Not Stupid!

I’ve been around the block before, once or twice. I officially started my career after graduating from college in 1986. With my degree in hand, I secured a sales position working for a web publications printer located in Manchester, NH. I was ambitious, goal oriented and extremely motivated to make my mark on the New England printing industry and I quickly rose to the top of the sales team within that company. Ready for a new challenge, I changed jobs in 1989 to broaden my knowledge and explore new sales territories. Little did I know, recession had set in and was wholloping the advertising and graphic design firms hard, with Boston shops (my new territory) especially hard-hit. I found that I needed to reinvent myself – and my offerings – in order to preserve the hard won clientele I’d earned and to continue to grow as a sales professional. I went back to school with a new emphasis on marketing, more of a big picture approach than my first degree in Graphic Arts had offered. I attended every sales and professional development seminar I could and read and listened to countless business books, motivational CDs, sales bibles, you name it. I was a consummate professional, eager to learn the skills and tools that I would need to succeed in a difficult economic climate.

Looking back, I know that it was during that earlier recession that I found out what I was made of. I think that it is easy for most folks to get along fairly well during times of plenty, but, as the old adage says, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. It was during my first career downturn that I proved to myself how ‘tough’ I could be. I learned to compete for business opportunities like my life depended on it. And, let’s face it, it did!

Since that time, I’ve seen many boom years with a few ‘bust’ years thrown in, especially for certain industries. Over all of this time, I have found that reinventing myself has become part of the deal. If I don’t currently have what the market wants, I need to find a way to offer it.

Times are tough again, as most of you reading this have probably experienced first-hand. Never before have I seen such a widespread downturn in so many critical industries and it seems as difficult as any time I remember in my 20 year career to find good job opportunities to get a career going – or restarted – on the right track.

If you are a young professional, a recent grad or a more seasoned veteran transitioning to a new industry or position, take heart. Tough times never last but tough people do. You already have what it takes to succeed, within you. Sure it takes tenacity and perseverance. It takes courage and faith, too. But these are all qualities that reside within you. Separate yourself from the pack by not whining and complaining about the economy and know that somehow, somewhere, someone (maybe you?) is finding a way to make their mark, despite the economic downturn, despite any disadvantage (real or perceived) they might have had to overcome.

Real winners acted like winners before they won. They believed in themselves. Sure, the economy sucks, but you are not stupid. Change it up! Learn what you need to know to move forward. Read more, pick up a class, attend a seminar, invest in yourself. Find a mentor or two and learn from other smart, successful people you meet how they became who they are today. You will likely find out that we all have had to pay our dues along the path to professional growth. You become extraordinary by going that extra mile. Believe in yourself and the power of your dreams then go out there and show the world what you’ve got!

Create a dress code for staffers. Make sure your visitors can tell who is there to give them advice or information.
Smells often trigger the most pleasant memories
Put a drop of vanilla or lavender on a lightbulb
Rent cookie or bread baking equipment
Activity attracts peoples attention and piques their interest.
Make something move! Offer Demonstrations or throw giveaways in the air to attract attention.
Personalize your exhibit, add an area rug or add props to make it more cozy.
Improve your lighting: The human eye is naturally attracted to light so be the brightest on your block
Eliminate all physical barriers to your booth to create an open atmosphere. Move the furniture back & to the sides to make space for guests.
Use graphics to set the appropriate mood; Your exhibit is an important marketing opportunity-the chance to make a quick impression on buyers
Develop a simple message: Tell them who you are & what you do! Give three advantages that distinguish you from your competitors.
Be aware of the mood you put people in with the colors you use:
Black=Authority
White=Purity
Blue=Serenity
Be aware of the mood you create with the colors you use:

People need an incentive to visit your booth. They are eager to learn about the latest technologies, new applications or anything that will save them time and/or money.

Consider offering a premium item that will entice them:

•Your giveaways should be designed to increase your memorability and increase recognition of your company
•Developing a dynamite giveaway takes thought and creativity

–Use color to attract attendees to your booth

•Bright, rich colors presented in high contrast attract visitors to your booth

•Consider hiring a graphic design professional to create effective visual graphics for your display—you may find it well worth the investment!

Create an atmosphere

In addition to eye catching and informative graphic displays, you should:

–Eliminate all physical barriers to your booth to create an open atmosphere

•Move the furniture back and to the sides to create space for attendees to come into your booth for discussion and ultimately: SALES!

–Improve your lighting

•The human eye is naturally attracted to light

•Be the brightest on your block

–Upgrade to quality carpeting and flooring

•Personalize your exhibit, add an area rug or add props to make it more cozy

Welcome to NH, Ms. Steinem!

Gloria Steinem in NH

Steinem travels worldwide as a lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972 and was one of its editors for 15 years. She also helped to found New York magazine, where she worked as a political columnist.Steinem continues to serve as a consulting editor and columnist for Ms. and was instrumental in the magazine's recent move to join forces with the nonprofit Feminist Majority Foundation.

Her books include the bestsellers Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem, Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, Moving Beyond Words, and Marilyn: Norma Jean, on the life of Marilyn Monroe. As an organizer, Steinem helped to found the Women's Action Alliance, a national center for information and advocacy in such areas as nonsexist, multiracial children's education and communication among women's groups, and the National Women's Political Caucus, a nonpartisan organization devoted to advancing pro-equality women of all races. She is president of Voters for Choice, an independent bipartisan political action committee that supports candidates working for reproductive freedom.

Steinem is also a founding president of the Ms. Foundation for Women, a national, multiracial women's fund that supports grassroots projects to empower women and girls. After growing up primarily in the Midwest where her unconventional childhood included no full year of schooling until she was 12, Steinem graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1956. Following graduation, she lived in India for almost two years as a Chester Bowles Asian Fellow.

There she wrote for Indian publications and was influenced by Ghandian activism. As both a writer and an activist, she remains particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems; gender roles and child abuse as the roots of violence; non-violent conflict resolution; the cultures of indigenous people; and in organizing across national boundaries for peace and justice.

Steinem speaks today at SNHU's Women's Leadership Summit. Welcome to NH, Ms. Steinem!

Inspired by the Food Network TV Show “Iron Chef,” three teams of marketing and industry pros were tasked to come up with a complete marketing package for this year’s Iron Design Competion. This year's mystery client: a line of high fashion designs comprised of…road kill. And, they only had one hour to do it.

NHCC President Chris Conroy & Heartwood Media CEO, said the club is always trying to include more presentations to involve the audience. “The Iron Design competition is inspiring & educational. Those attending can walk around & observe competing teams collaborate and work together.”

This year’s Top Secret Product was pretty hard to keep under wraps, according to Print Savvy CEO Lisa Landry, who hosts the competition every year. “We really tried to kick it up a notch this year.” said Landry. “We really brainstormed to come up with something that 100% unique & not already in the marketplace,” she added.

Indeed, the “Flapper” dress sporting faux suede & a variety of faux beaver tails flopping around was a sight to behold. Ptjer Fashions included the “Fawn Over Me” little hot-pant number was a crowd pleaser, & the “La Pew” gown was an example of elegance, as much as one can get wearing skunk stripes. “We really had a good time with creating the costumes, as this is really the only morally righteous way to wear fur” stated Joel Mercier, Print Savvy’s Event Coordinator “You can say that this product is truly green & comes from 100% natural resources!”

The evening began with a selection of food that included gourmet Panini sandwiches & delicious chicken chili that both participants & audience members noshed upon as they networked, & concluded with text-voting, ala “American Idol” style, to declare the 2009 “Iron Design” trophy: a cast-iron skillet. “My clients are still raving about the food,” said Print Savvy Senior Account Executive Ami D’Amelio “It really was in a different league this year!”

The three teams that came to the table were Calypso Communications, of Portsmouth, who sent a team of seven of their best talent, while the Timberland Company of Stratham sent four of their award-winning team members to compete.

“The final team added a bit of a twist to the competition this year – six industry veterans who had never worked together before, all currently “under-employed,” made up the final team, and called themselves The Marketing All-Stars,” Landry said. The three teams worked for just one hour as the audience looked on. Then, it was time to showcase their stuff.

“Each team brought their own unique strengths to the competition, Timberland came up with a great name and had a fantastic logo, Calypso had terrific ideas for selecting a celebrity to sponsor and promote the clothing line, including giant billboard displays in NYC’s Time Square, but it was clear that the Marketing All-Stars had the most audience votes,” Conroy said as he declared the winners.

“I think it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there for this competition, & we’re extremely proud of all the competitors. Each team had a unique & interesting offering. I loved the way team Calypso positioned the clothing line as a trailer chic lifestyle brand that used celebrity endorsement already popular in that demographic (they recommended Miley Cyrus & Matthew McConoughey) & I was especially fond of the logo from Team Timberland. It was cute, to the point & very, very funny. Finally, I was totally impressed by the way the Marketing All Stars worked together without corporate backing. Talk about a creative & innovative way to show the marketplace what you can do—especially in this economy! I suppose audience chose to ‘hire’ the All-Stars because they had their game on & like me, they were inspired by their chutzpah.” Landry said “They clearly took the challenge very seriously.”

Print Savvy's New Business Development Team to Compete in New Hampshire Division of Economic Development's Business Bowl

Second Annual Business Bowl Features New Twist

MANCHESTER – Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs was just an appetizer. The main course in the battle of the sexes will actually take place on Friday, June 5th at 7:30 p.m. as a team of five female business professionals takes on a team of five male business professionals as part of the Second Annual New Hampshire Business Bowl at The Acting Loft Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

During the course of the Manchester Wolves – Albany Conquest af2 football game, two teams of five local business professionals will take part in fun and competitive “office Olympics” style events which will test their teamwork skills. The women’s team will be led by Print Savvy CEO Lisa Landry while North American Equipment Upfitters President Michael Dunican will be at the helm of the men’s squad. The winner of the competition will receive the second annual Business Bowl trophy, (STEPHANIE, CAN YOU PLEASE FILL IN THE OTHER PRIZES?).

“Last year’s Business Bowl demonstrated the great teamwork that it takes to build a winning organization and we’re glad to be able to introduce an interesting new twist to this year’s event,” said Manchester Wolves General Manager Stephanie Bike. “We all know that men and women each contribute to the success of local businesses and play a vital role in writing a Granite State success story both in the boardroom and on the playing field.”

New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher added that the Business Bowl is part of his agency’s desire to reach out to new clients in innovative and non-traditional ways.
“Rather than hosting a regular business after hours or scheduling a typical ‘getting to know you’ networking session, we want to engage the business community in an enjoyable and interesting way,” he said. “Building new relationships and establishing partnerships is supposed to be fun – who really gets jazzed up by business as usual?”

Prior to the Business Bowl event, the Business Resource Center, the Wolves and their media partners New Hampshire Business Review and WGAM will host a free business appreciation reception for the first 50 business respondents at Piccola Italia Ristorante at 5:30 p.m. To make reservations for the free reception or purchase tickets to the game (at the special Business Bowl price of $10 per ticket), contact the Manchester Wolves at 627-9653 or sbike@manchesterwolves.com.
