David Ogilvy’s trailblazing growth strategy still works today by Lisa Landry Advertising legend David Ogilvy of Ogilvy & Mather provided a great example of how generously giving away some of your industry knowledge and expertise can lead to increased paid business opportunities, and made him “the most sought after wizard in the business.” Beginning in the late 1960’s, Ogilvy launched a series of “house” ads giving detailed instructions on how to create ads that sell. His critics thought he’d lost his marbles by giving away his intellectual property. But what really happened? He demonstrated to the world that he was the thought leader on how to write high impact effective advertising content and his own business soared. These same principles can still work for your business today. Your organization can grow revenue by giving away something of real value that leads to future business. What service could you “give away?” Does your organization excel at something unique? Can your organization offer valuable knowledge that will position you as the go to person in your field? Offer “niche” service to gain customer loyalty. One type of event is to provide a niche service at a premium value so that your audience perceives you as their business ally. The point is not to make a direct profit on these services, but rather to deliver value to the attendees to secure future business. Headshot Workshop: For example, we run a highly successful event for our customers to get a convenient professional headshot. We bring in expert hair and make-up artists and a talented photographer to shoot the images – providing each attendee with a professional headshot for use in social media and PR. Because it’s an organized event, the price is much lower than an individual sitting, and it’s more fun too because they’re social events that make the customers feel like stars. Offer “gatekeeper” knowledge to gain future business. At Savvy, we apply Ogilvy’s principal by producing a series of one to four hour workshops that deliver valuable knowledge for a small registration fee that covers lunch and room space. The point is not to make a direct profit on these learning events, but rather to deliver value to the attendees to forge future business. These workshops are designed to educate, inform and inspire our existing clients and reach out to potential customers. Think of each event as a one-to-many sales meeting, with a roomful of engaged and interested attendees that might otherwise take weeks and months to visit face to face. We think of these events as “Education Based Marketing.” Each program offers informative speakers that attract like-minded professionals looking to keep their competitive edge, sharpen their skills and stay on top of the latest industry trends. These learning events deliver significant results for our business. We’ve expanded our network, received great PR, and enhanced relationships with existing customers. Savvy Seminars Our seminar events have included book reviews featuring New York Times Best Seller author Jeffrey Fox with personal insights from his book “How to Become a Rainmaker.” Another successful event was our “What Not To Wear” Seminar where attendees got advice about how to dress for success and put together a wardrobe that will work for them. In each case, the participants came away with valuable information and remember Savvy Workshop as the host. Savvy Boot Camps Through our lunch and learn boot camps, we’ve presented informative sessions designed to help our clients succeed in today’s marketplace. In each boot camp, we bring in experts and thought leaders to share their ideas, inspire and inform us and our visitors. Tradeshows: For example, last summer’s Tradeshow Boot Camp prepared workshop participants and their staff for upcoming tradeshow events, including pre-show promotion, day of event coaching and post tradeshow follow up to maximize return on investment for any tradeshow or conference. Branding: This Savvy Boot Camp focused on branding and provided comprehensive overview of where all good marketing starts—with the message and positioning of products or services to differentiate an organization with distinctive attributes. Public Relations: Another Savvy Boot Camp showed how to develop and leverage public relations through all media channels to get the most buzz for your business. Sales Coaching: Our Savvy Boot Camp featured Sandler Sales expert Kevin Hallenbeck, who captivated the entire class with an overview of implementing a disciplined sales system that will empower professionals to better qualify leads, shorten the sales cycles, and increase sales close ratios. Become a Super Star Presenter: Our recent Savvy Boot Camp featured Spark Presentations’ Andy Saks, who shared his many years of experience presenting in many different venues across the country. He highlighted inside tips for engaging audiences and creating captivating presentations. In many of these events, we feature case exercises in which the entire class participates in brainstorming sessions on how to help a local non-profit organization that is in attendance that day. Everyone wins -- the non-profit organization gets great ideas from the entire class and the participants have an opportunity to offer their valuable input for a higher cause. Win #1 – Clients gain something of value These workshops are packed with relevant information or provide a unique service, and are not commercials from presenters or hosts. The audience gains a sense of trust. Win #2 – We forge business relationships We build stronger relationships with our audience as they learn how we are a valuable resource for their business. Win#3 – Presenters get exposure These workshops provide great exposure for the presenters, experts and contributors to these events. As we promote these learning opportunities, we also promote all who support us! Win #4 – Network, network, network These events attract like-minded professionals from all walks of life and are high quality networking events that ignite new business relationships. Win #5 – Public relations through community service As we promote these events through online and social media outlets, our attendees share these posts which dramatically increase our reach. Follow Ogilvy’s lead… share your knowledge and increase your value! Find a subject that interests your customers, invite an expert in and host an event. Grow your business and professional network by serving as the catalyst for providing service or knowledge of value to your audience. Your organization will gain by giving.
